More ‘Game of Thrones’ news – Jamie has been cast
Another important piece of the puzzle is in place for HBO’s upcoming adaptation of the George R. R. Martin’s fantasy epic ‘A Game of Thrones.’ Jamie Lannister will be played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who had the lead as the doomed captain of the doomed starship in the doomed series Virtuality. You may recall that I loved Virtuality, even though I’m virtually the only person to have seen it. Anyway, Coster-Waldau did a nice job in the lead role and I’m very excited for his take on Jamie. This is a meaty part of the Game of Thrones series, but gains much more depth as you get a few thousand pages into the epic. Since HBO is currently only planing to adapt the first book (understandably), we’ll have to wait and see if the series survives long enough for Coster-Waldau to really get crazy with this character.
In the meantime, it’s very encouraging that the thing is moving forward. Its amazingly ambitious project, but HBO is already in too deep to turn around. Shooting begins in Ireland in October.
Finally – some ‘Game of Thrones’ news
The good old SciFi Wire is reporting that the above-pictured Peter Dinklage has signed on to the HBO adaptation of George R. R. Martin‘s Game of Thrones. This is great news for so many resons. Lets list them, shall we?
- This means there actually is a project. Up until now, there was talk, but little or nothing concrete.
- Dinklage is perfect to play Tyrion, a brilliant and complex character who is also a dwarf. When I started reading this series, I was floored at how much there was to this character. Although there are many aspects to the story which don’t concern Tyrion, the material that revolves around him and his supremely f-‘d up family is, in my opinion, the best part of the book.
- Director Thomas McCarthy is Dinklage’s running partner from the Station Agent. HBO’s choice of McCarthy tells me a lot about how important Tyrion’s character will be to this adaptation and that is outstanding.
I’m not expecting anything to actually air anytime soon, but at least the thing is moving forward and there some good thinking about how to do this project.
The Low Point
I’ve now finished three of these monstrous books and it’s time for a break. This is great fantasy with politics, sex, battle, and just a touch of the supernatural. A lot of major characters get killed off, which is no problem, because it sooooo long. Each volume is nearly 1000 pages. I need to take a break before the next one, just to get my head out of crazy Dungeon and Dragon land.
The Ice & Fire series is tedious, but it’s nothing compared to chemo. Em is now finished with inpatient #5, which means this weekend just plain sucks. Bad taste in mouth, no energy, meager appetite and just general suckiness. Of course, the animals are helping out a good bit. Right now, Grace is parked on Em’s chest and providing a soothing and relaxing hot-water-bottle treatment. It’s nice of that cat to help me out a bit.
The Phillies are getting beaten up by the Giants right now. After last night’s emotional come-from-behind win, it’s hard to imagine they can sustain the intensity. On another sports-related note, Massa is on pole for Turkey, which will hold its Grand P tomorrow. The Indy 500 qualifying is today, I think, but I have to say I’m not all that interested.
