Virtuality Paranoia – How do we know what is real?

I am amused and encouraged by the infiltration of one of the show’s main themse ( how do we know what is real?) into the discussion of the series’ non-existent future. It’s almost as if critics refuse to believe that something that looks so amazing would get put in the garbage by FOX. If there is some ulterior motive to airing that program on a Friday in the middle of the summer (basically the network cutting it’s losses and filling up otherwise dead space ), and the
Inexplicable sinking of a small fortune into marketing and promoting something that’s not there. It is strange.

The show is dead. There will be no series. And, as if to drive the point home, the reason that the show is dead is because the ratings were a disaster. And the reason for that was that Virtuality aired aginst specials about major celebrities who had just … died.

Ronald D. Moore’s Virtuality – Fox ain’t buyin’ it

I just finished watching Virtuality, and I have to say that I loved it. It’s way past my bedtime and I’ll give a fuller review tomorrow. I can definitely see why Fox is passing on the series, but to get to see just two hours of the madness that might have been is still pretty satisfying.

Shirt version: if this thing gets green lit ( and I hope it does), Moore has given himself a massive canvas to work with. It may yet happen and it may even be profitable, but this is Moore looking to cash in on some hard earned Battlestar cred. If Virtuality happens, there is a risk of self-indulgence. Moore would proudly say that it is his intention to push the envelope of narrative to it’s outer limits.

Based on what we see in this two-hour pilot, he may hve gone beyond the limit.

Feeding Frenzy

shark-feeding

Justice will be served.  It will be rare.  It will be bloody.  But it will be served, and we will be privy to every gory detail.  This is what it means to choose a new Supreme Court Justice in this day and age.  Law and politics are not supposed to go together – that’s why this is painful.  And with the lifetime appointment, the chosen Judge will wield an enduring kind of power.  Just as with the run-up to the election in November of last year, there will be another (though different) crescendo that will be made all the louder by the echo chamber, but I’ll offer more on that another time.

I have added the Slate.com – Jurisprudence category to my links.  Emily Bazelon and Dahlia Lithwick are extremely sharp legal minds who who have the greatest jobs any lawyer could ever hope for.  (There are also other writers in that section of the Slate stable, but I don’t know anything about them, yet.)

But it’s all so left-wing.  I really need to break out of the echo chamber so I can, at least, understand the substance, scanty though it may prove to be, of the myriad smears that will undoubtedly follow Obama’s selection of the nominee.  There’s also the chance that I may not agree with every aspect of the candidate’s judicial philosophy.  Something tells me that National Review Online and Town Hall are not going to satisfy the need for a more scholarly critique.

This is, or will be, good theater.  The media (including ‘new’) relish the story, the controversy, the drama that just keeps on giving.  That’s how everyone was with the election, and I expect much of the same this summer.  Beware the pundits!  Don’t get sucked into the fake journalists who are really just talking heads starring in their own version of reality TV.  For those folks, the Court doesn’t matter.  Obama doesn’t matter.  All that matters is their brilliance and beauty as they, oh so humbly, bring you this pivotal moment in history.  Where would we be without them?!?

But I eat it up also.  It’s exciting and important.  The hearings might get rough, but there’s an excellent chance that no one will die.  All the latest technology will be employed by both those ‘for’ and those ‘against’, but in the end it will come down to the ancient process set forth in our Constitution.

And, at it’s best, the debate will be philosophical and complex.  If it is a current member of the bench, we will look at opinions and briefs and law reviews.  Hey!  That’s basically what I do for a living.  Cool!  Even if it’s not a current or former judge, we will still learn everything about this person.  Everything she did in her life up until this moment is fair game – everything she ever said.  And we will not be looking for those ‘gotcha!‘ moments.  Hopefully, the Obama people are smart enough not to select a child molester for the high bench.

No, instead, we will look at the niceties of language and thought.  At our best, we will want to learn how this person thinks and predict what this person will do within the highest ivory tower this country has.  Supreme Court Justices don’t make policy or write law.  I don’t care how far right or left anyone thinks a certain Judge may happen to be.  Whether you like them or not, their job is to decide cases.  The cases make the law, but the Judges can only decide cases.

So, in those realms where the debate is elveated above the feeding frenzy, we will learn about cases.  In other places, the only case anyone will discuss or remember will be Roe v. Wade, but that is to be expected from media that is more concerned with entertaining you than enlightening you.  But I will hear the names of vaguely remembered cases from law school, and I will run to look them up and I will discover, all over again, the wonder of our common law.  It is a living thing that changes and grows all the time.  That is not a partisan utterance, but rather a documented fact that I live with every day as a modest trial lawyer.  Customs become molded into law by case decisions over the years, and then the old rules change and new rules come along as human thought is not a static process.

Enjoy the show, but don’t forget to listen and watch carefully.  Everyone knows how important this is, but let us share a greater understanding of how it works – not just the selection process, but the actual job that must be done afterwards.

My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama

My need for approval is a bit appalling. I changed the search terms for my greenscreen video and the number of ‘views’ on Youtube jumped from about 30 to almost 600 in less than a day. You would think that would do the trick, but noooooooooo… Until I see that thing posted on colbertnation (link intentionally omitted!) I won’t be happy. AND, the worst part is that another video WAS posted today (my birthday) and I thought it was mine, but it just had a very similar title (McCain Rocking vs Rockin’ McCain). Oh, the injustice! Damn you, colbertnation!!!!!!

A better week

Remember this guy?

OK. We’re ready for the last go-round, the final cycle of chemo for Emily. One more inpatient (Weds) and one more outpatient (the following Weds) and then we’re done. I can’t believe how close it is. We’ve been looking forward to this date for so long that it almost doesn’t seem real. We haven’t made plans to travel or anything. We’re just focusing on what’s in front of us and not getting too far ahead, but believe me, there will be some day off taken!

My mom is getting a mac for her desktop and I am looking forward to setting it up with her during the holiday weekend. I’ll be with her on Monday for some good bonding.

On Sunday we’re doing a 5k walk/run for ovarian cancer awareness and fundraising. We’ll be in beautiful Fairmount Park with lots of friends and family. Included in the family is the gentleman pictured above. Needless to say, Emily is all a-twitter with excitement.

Black Mac (book)

New computer is integrating nicely into my work routine. It’s really cool having everything available all the time – that WAS the point. It’s kind of amazing how Outlook doesn’t export calendar at all and the export for contacts is so difficult that it might as well not be available. And this is from Office (windows) to Office (mac) – all Microsoft products. They just can’t get it right!

But everything is going swimmingly and, except for the import/export issues, I really like Entourage. the rest of Office is pretty much the same (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). The project management is keeping me on my toes.

Friday is here! Bring on the Battlestar

I’m sitting with Em, watching a pretty good Phillies game and waiting for the season premier of Battlestar. We had some tough times earlier, but some hugs and tears later, and some outstanding Chiwishi, we’re doing OK.

I think there’s not enough room between paragraphs, but that’s an admin issue. There are some updates and things that should be mentioned about ol’ MPomy.com. I’m a little disturbed about the URL and the referral. I would prefer for ‘mpomy.com’ to just take you right to this site, without the word ‘wordpress’ in the title. The problem is that I have to review the installation instructions. When I started with this thing, I didn’t know if this was going to work out. Seems like it is, so far.

I’ve got streaming audio with a nice little playlist. I’d almost like to get the thing to play on it’s own and scramble the selections, but I’m otherwise satisfied with that. Also, there are a lot of stupid decorations just thrown on to the ‘Music‘ page. These are silly, but they make me smile.

An issue I’m interested in is using the ‘categories’ feature to collect posts on different ‘pages’. For example, you should be able to access all the ‘law’ posts on the law page. Same with ‘motorsport’. So if I do a post about MpomyCo Orianna Momentum, that should be attached to the Motorsport page. Right now, of course, there is no Law page and there is currently nothing at the Motorsport page.
